Abstract

It is believed that the competition among small retail businesses and between small and bigger retail busi• ness are very tight Some studies show that some small retail businesses could survive among those competi­ tion, even evidence show that some of them could go internationally. Tbis research is dedicated to explore factors which determine the ability of small scale busi• nesses to survive and to compete internationally. This research revealed that competition among small scale retail businesses in Yogjakarta is very high. Majority (49%) of the bu ness sell the similar product. The density of the busilless is about 3 or 4 unit similar business in one Ian square area. The tighness of the competition is also indicated by the high rate of entry and exit. Most of the owner (92%) are the foundation of the businesses and only 8% of the owner are the second generation owner. Since the competition is very high, the busi• ness developes their strategy to survive and to com­ peteinternationally. The strength of thesurvival of the businesses is relied on the location, product choices, and services for the customer.
