Abstract

Namnam or kopi anjing is the name of a type of fruit trees from family of legumes (Leguminosae or Fabaceae). This plant is one of the native species in Indonesia that cointains alkaloid, flavonoid, saponin, steroid and tannin. The purpose of this study was to determine the ability of antibacterial activity of Namnam leaf extract against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This study uses a completely randomized design with treatments in variation concentrations of ethyl acetate extract of namnam leaves. This study begins with the extraction process with maceration for 5 days using solvent ethyl acetate. Extract devised into various concentrations of 20, 40, 60 and 80%, and tested for antibacterial activity by the paper disk method. Size inhibition zone formed from the extract with a concentration of 20, 40, 60 and 80 % for Staphylococcus epidermidis sequentially was 0.84, 0.94, 1 and 1.3 cm2 while for Pseudomonas aeruginosa sequentially is 0.58, 0.84, 0.98 and 1.16 cm2. Based on the research, 80 % concentration is the concentration of the most effective in inhibiting Staphylococcus epidermidis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. After knows the effective concentration of the extract, continued with testing of Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) against both bacteria test with liquid dilution method and Total Plate Count (TPC).
