Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop a decision framework model for the design and selection of material hand ling system in a manufacture system based on strategic approach to product design. In this study, the model for design and selection of material handling system developed by Gupta has suitably been modified to apply to the present case study. This includes development of a suitable criterion for the selection of a material handling system for the given manufacturing system. For this purpose a number of alternative material handling systems have been evaluated based on adaptability factor. The model application is completed in two phases. First phase is called selection process. The purpose of this phase is to find the best possible alternative among all possible alternatives proposed in systems. Alternative material handling system has next been evaluated based on adaptability factor. To minimize the subjective influences in the evaluation process, Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) has been employed. The next phase, (the second phase) is called the evaluation phase. The alternatives are next simulated to obtain the system performance, and their utilization . Simple ++ simulation has been performed for the purpose of this study. The best selection made in phase 1 is confirmed in phase 2 through performance evaluation. Using the proposed model of decision making, A case study has been undertaken for the IPTN plant.
