Abstract
Efficiency is an important factor that determines the overall performance of a bank. Recognizing the importance of bank efficiency above, this research tries to ana/ize several factors influencing the efficiency of banking industry in Indonesia. Those factors include bank's market share, motivation or role of bank owner in managing a bank, bank's liquidity, and bank's status of being a foreign exchange bank. Since the data ana/ized includes the years when Indonesia had an economic crisis, economic crisis that was started in the late I990s is also used as one of the independent variables. By employing a stratified random sampling to the bank population in Indonesia, this research uses the data from 88 banks that constitute approximately 40% of the total number of banks in Indonesia in 1997 when the economic crisis started It comes to a general conclusion that, first, fund concentration ratio, as the indicator that reflects bank's market share, has insignificant effect on the bank's efficiency, which is relflected by the return on asset. Second, equity to asset ratio, as the indicator that reflects the motivation of share-holder, has significant positive effect on the bank's efficiency. Third, time deposit ratio, as the indicator that reflects the bank's liquidity, has significant positive effect on the bank's efficiency.
