Abstract

The Tecnological advence, especially in transportation field, and pressure to meet the need of human movement in urban areas have a negative impact to the development of towns and cities. Priority has been given much on accommodating the motorised vehicular traffic, such as highway and motorway instead of providing a comfortable and enjoyable pedestrian precint. Many books have been written to criticize this situation. Francis Tibbalds, the author of Making People-friendly Towns: Improving the Public Environment in Town and Cities, argues 10 principles of urban design which give regards to the existence of human beings. These 10 principles are: (1) “Places” matter most (2) what are the lessons from the past?, (3) Mixing uses and Activities, (4) Human Scale, (5) Pedestrian Freedom, (6) Access for all, (7) Making it clear, (8) Lasting Environment, (9) Controlling Change, and (10) Joining it all Together. On the other hand there has been significant tend of urban development on the conservation basis for many decades. This writing attempts to figure out the relevance of the two: the principles of people-friendly urban design and the values of conservation. The aim is to strengthen both the prinsiples of urban design and the values of conservation especially in practical field. The rusult is that some prinsiples in making people- friendly town have significant relevance with some items of conservation values. This finding is important to set up program priorities in formulating conservation plan
