Abstract

Illegal fishing phenomenon in Indonesian water territory is getting worse. Illegal fishing causes an enormous economic impact to the country and it also ruins the ocean ecosystem. Indonesian government takes a firm stance against that illegal action by applying a policy to sink down the ships which trespass Indonesian water territory and do the illegal fishing. This research aims to find out the effectiveness of sinking down ships policy as an effort to overcome the illegal fishing problem. The methodology of this research was empirical method where the data was gathered from literature study and interviews. The result of this showed that the policy of sinking down the trespasser and illegal ships has been pretty effective to overcome the illegal fishing problem proven by the decreasing illegal fishing problem occurred year by year. The researcher suggested that the expenses prepared for the policy application were given to the fishermen in order to take care of their ships and they also needed to be given counseling about the correct fishing procedures according to the regulation
