Abstract

Higher education campuses as modern elements has had an important role in the development of the region in some places in Yogyakarta. One area that is developing dynamically due to the existence of the higher education campus is Tambakbayan-Babarsari region. Within fifteen year-TambakbayanBabarsari region developed into a mixed use region that is triggered by educational activities in university campuses. The existence of Atma Jaya Yogyakarta University and several other universities have become a generator the dynamics of local life of the region. Tambakbayan-Babarsari region since 2000 has gradually evolved into a commercial mixed-use area, in which the synergistic activities of the university campuses with economic supporting activites (Purbadi & Purwaningsih, 2014). Exploratory research based on fenomomenology done to understanding the phenomenon of the dynamics of the region as a result of the region's economic development generated by university campuses in the region Tambakbayan-Babarsari. The study's findings indicate that the role of external actors (exogenous elements) of the region dominate the role of the internal actors (endogenous element), resulting in changes in the dynamics of local life and the region in the frame of modernity on the Tambakbayan-Babarsari region.
