Abstract

This thesis poses the legal question as to whether the rules of international humanitarian law on the protection of civilians and civilian objects were appropriately applied and respected during the armed conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006. The research undertaken focused on the facts surrounding the conflict, that is to say the actions and/or omissions of the belligerent parties as reported by the press, independent observers and other investigations carried out following the cessation of the conflict. As such this research can be qualified as normative legal research, undertaken via library and archival sources and analyzed using a qualitative method. From the analysis of the data it could be concluded that during the 34 days armed conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006 neither civilians nor civilian objects received any protection that they were entitled to under article 3 of the Geneva Convention 1949 and the principle of distinction.
