Abstract

Air is a critical resource for all life, and its protection is essential for human health. Effective waste management is vital for maintaining air quality, as specified in Law No. 18 of 2008 on Waste Management. This law defines waste as a solid byproduct of human and natural processes. Poor waste management, particularly through waste incineration, significantly contributes to air pollution by releasing harmful chemicals into the atmosphere, especially from burning plastic materials. This study explores the role of the Sleman Environmental Agency in mitigating air pollution caused by waste burning in Kapanewon Depok, Sleman Regency. According to Radar Jogja, air quality in Sleman has deteriorated, with waste burning being a major factor, exacerbated by the closure of the Piyungan Landfill. This pollution poses severe health risks, including respiratory infections, heart disease, and cancer, and causes environmental harm such as ecosystem disruption and acid rain. The research evaluates the Sleman Environmental Agency's efforts to address these issues, identifying challenges and potential solutions. Utilizing an empirical legal research approach, the study gathers primary data from interviews and secondary data from legal documents and literature. The findings aim to offer insights into effective waste management and provide recommendations for local authorities, enhancing environmental policies and community awareness.
