Abstract
The kitchen is a room with a specific function in the residence. Technology development and design of both local and international kitchen is interesting to observe if it is associated with residential architecture. Qualitative research purposes Rationalistic approach is to examine the development of shape and shifts of meaning through the adaptation of living in the home kitchen outskirts of Yogyakarta. The house stayed in this research is a residential vernacular. Data was collected through observation and interviews in the field to document the response and adaptation to occur kitchen space. The study was conducted with the restriction on the function, style of dwelling, number of respondents kitchen and character. Search for meaning viewed from the primary elements and forms found. The study found that adaptation replacement fuel forming a compact space character, relations kitchen to the main house is brought near but separated, the kitchen space characters 'private' in the residence.
