Abstract

Mastering sophisticated technology, owning large amount of costs, being punctual in time, and having attitude for quality first are the most prominent matters in seizing construction service markets. In international world, quality is fundamental for evaluating the ability of any corporation in meeting the needs and satisfaction of consumers. In order to do so, it is very important for every company to have a quality standard system recognized by all countries. This research aims to identify the perception of construction businessman in Indonesia both contractors and consultants toward the implementation of ISO 9000 certification system. Data was collected by distributing a set of questionnaires to company leaders and managers. Of 210 distributed questionnaires, 30 were returned completely. Data was analyzed by the use SPSS 7.5 program to obtain a percentage used for identifying any corporation based upon the long time of existence, amount of projects had been completed, ranking/classification, and also relationship with ISO 9000. Mean analysis is used to understand the dominant factors, and Spearman's rank correlation analysis is used to know the correlation between company's age and also its qualification with perception to the ISO 9000 certification system. The results showed that 63.3% of the respondents have experienced the ISO 9000 training. It was however only 40% of those who got the ISO 9000 certificates. There were two most dominant factors, which influence the perception of respondents toward ISO 9000 certification system. First, increasing of quality and consumers satisfaction was fundamental for construction business. Second, certificate was not a quarantee for the quality of products. The most impede factor about the implementation of ISO 9000 certification system was the difficulty of implementing the system simultaneously from highest line to lowest line. Correlation analysis showed that there was no any correlation between the perception of ISO 9000 and its implementation toward company's age. This meant that despite the increase of company's age, it would not affect the view toward ISO 9000 and the implementation. The perception of ISO 9000 and its implementation toward the qualification showed had a significant relationship. This showed that qualification of company's influenced the perception toward the implementation of ISO 9000. Correlation analysis showed that there was no any relationship between the perception of Certificate and Certification with company's age and classification of corporation.
