Abstract

The Channel steel is a common material that is used in the construction structure. This material is chosen because of some advantages. There are good at compression and tension value, lightweight and low volume with quite high strength, and relatively easier to install. These advantages lead the C steel commonly used in the roof truss construction. Yet, the c shaped steel is not good at the stability. It is because the centroid is not in the middle so local buckling easily occurred. Hence, the stiffeners required to be installed to maintain the proper strength and stability of steel. In this Experiment, the three variant lengths of 500mm, 750mm, and 1000 mm samples of C shaped steel’s compression strength will be test with 3 mm thick steel plate as stiffeners and without stiffeners. The stiffener length is 6 cm with the spacing ¼ of sample’s length. To run the experiment, the samples were tested using two kinds of machines. There are the UTM Machine and Loading Frame. The 500 and 750 mm were tested using UTM machine while the 1000 mm length were tested using the loading frame and the hydraulic jack. The samples were given the load until they reach the maximum compression capacity and the maximum deflection will be record using LVDT. The purpose of this experiment is to identify the maximum load and maximum deflection that can be applied on the variant length of C Steel bar stiffened with stiffeners plate of 3mm thickness and to measure the strength increment. To predict the maximum load of samples, the theoretical analysis based on SNI 7971:2013 about Baja Canai Dingin, and AISC 2007 about Compression Member were used. The results obtain from this experiment are the stiffened sample of S1, S2, and S3 obtained 3721.94 Kg, 3056.63 Kg, and 2511.12 Kg. The increasing capacity from US1, US2, and US3 samples to stiffened sample of S1, S2, and S3 are 334.18%, 336.69%, and 65.84%. The result shows that the US1 have the highest compression capacity value. Thus, the stiffeners is effective to increasing the compression strength value
