Abstract

This thesis is entitled “Effectiveness of Legal Provisions Regarding the Protection of Journalists Who Served in Areas of Armed Conflict”. This research is a normative research in which the writing of this research requires secondary data which is the main material. Journalists who are in areas of international armed conflict receive protection as civilians. International humanitarian law provides protection for journalists in international armed conflicts into two conceptions. First, protection of war correspondents in Article 4A paragraph (4) of Geneva Convention III 1949, relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War, secondly, protection of journalists who carry out dangerous professional missions in Article 79 of the Additional Protocol I 1977. The legal protection given to journalists serving in areas of international armed conflict has not been effective as a whole, even though it has been regulated by international humanitarian law. This is due to various factors, among others, firstly because not all countries have ratified the Conventions and Additional Protocols, the second factor because the Conventions and Additional Protocols cannot be directly implemented and the third factor is the lack of understanding and respect for the Conventions and Additional Protocols.
