Abstract

The conflict between Rusia and Ukraine has lasted for such significant amount of time. The conflict broke out in 2022 resulting in the attack of Rusia towards Ukraine in the wake of Ukraine’s decision to join NATO. The Russian attack and invasion of Ukraine were condemned by the world and several countries including European Union countries decided to impose sanctions on Russia such as economic sanction, the severance of diplomatic relations and blacklist. This research aimed to investigate the violation committed by Russia as stated in article 2 paragraph 4 of Charter of the United Nations and the principle of jus ad bellum. This research employed normative legal research focusing on the legal norms. The result of the research indicate that the Russian attack and invasion of Ukraine incurs sanctions from European Union Countries because such aggression violated the principle of jus ad bellum and article 2 paragraph 4 of Charter of the United Nations.
