Abstract

The rapid advancement of technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), affected modern warfare. IHL, especially the principle of proportionality required that the use of the latest weapon models did not have an adverse impact on civilians. The use of AI in armed conflict presented new challenges, and there is a need for specific regulations within IHL for Autonomous Weapon Systems (AWS). This research aimed to understand the use of automatic weapons system according to the principle of proportionality based on normative legal method. The research concludes that AI-based weapons are allowed under principle of proportionality if they adhere to its rules, requiring detailed calculations, so it does not violate the Principle of proportionality.
