Abstract

This study explores how non-engineered building designs in Lagos, Nigeria combine traditional methods with modern technologies. Through a thorough literature analysis and in- depth interviews with architects and homeowners, the study investigates architectural adaptations, cultural value, and sustainability in the context of Lagos' growing urbanization. Background: Lagos, Nigeria, has witnessed substantial urban growth, resulting in a transition away from traditional building traditions and toward modern, engineering structures. Traditional methods in Lagos include the use of locally sourced materials like mud bricks, bamboo, and thatch, which provide natural insulation and ventilation. Modern architectural advances, on the other hand, use new materials and technologies to improve structural integrity and comfort. Objectives: The fundamental goal of this research is to determine how traditional construction practices can be efficiently merged with current advances in non-engineered buildings. The specific goals include identifying traditional building practices and spatial organizations in Lagos, investigating the integration of modern and traditional techniques, researching innovative approaches to combining tradition and modernity, and analyzing how architects incorporate customs and cultural practices into modern house designs. Methods: A mixed-methods approach was used, consisting of a complete literature study and qualitative interviews with 12 architects and 18 homeowners in Lagos. The literature evaluation established a theoretical framework for understanding the advantages and disadvantages of combining traditional and modern techniques. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken to gain insights into the practical applicability and community perceptions of these integrations. Key findings: Integration of Traditional and Modern Techniques: Lagos architects frequently draw influence from traditional architectural forms, combining aspects like courtyards, natural ventilation systems, and locally available materials into contemporary designs. This hybrid architecture encourages sustainability and cultural preservation.
