Abstract

Along with the development of technology, buying and selling activities were not only conducted through face-to-face way. By using internet facilities, consumers could also buy things or service through electronic transaction or e-commerce. The consequences faced by the consumers were higher. If the consumers damaged due to e-commerce, they usually got difficulties in asking responsibility from the seller. Moreover, there were some consumers choose to surrender towards the damage due to the e-commerce. This research aimed to know the extent of consumer’s legal awareness in defending their rights towards the damage during the e-commerce. In conducting this research, the writer used empirical method which reviewed and analyzed the primary data which were gathered from the field in relation with the damage which was got by the consumers during conducting e-commerce. The data gathering technique which the writer used is distributing questionnaires to the citizen in Sleman Regency in order to know the consumer’s legal awareness in Sleman Regency Area addressing the damage in selling and buying through ecommerce. The research result showed that there was pessimistic from the consumers to get the compensation from the seller; due to the losses which ware not too big, they thought that the resolution of the disputes through legal way was too complicated; and the consumers did not know that their right was protected in Consumer Protection Law. Those were the factors which caused the consumers had low legal awareness in defending their rights towards the losses in electronic transaction.
