Abstract

Armed conflict in Syria lead to discomfort, fear, and misery for its citizens, so they decided to seek refuge in neighboring countries or countries which they can guarantee their safety. Hungary became one of the transit countries of the refugees. Issues that were raised in this research is the role of UNHCR in providing protection to refugees who are victims of the Syrian conflict in transit countries Hungary. This study aims to determine the role of UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees) in providing protection to refugees who are victims of the Syrian conflict in transit countries Hungary, and as one of the requirements to obtain a law degree at the Faculty of Law of the University of Atma Jaya Yogyakarta. This study uses normative research and literature. The data used is the primary legal materials consisting of the 1951 Convention and Protocol 1967 Relating to the Status of Refugee, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees Statute, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms as well as secondary data which consists of books, journals, theses, Internet-related research topics. UNHCR has generally been performing its role in providing protection for the Syrian refugees who are in transit countries Hungary. UNHCR's role, among others, the fulfillment of basic needs, clothing, food and shelter as well as the supervision of the existing refugees in transit country of Hungary
