Abstract

The emergence of radical group Boko Haram in 2002 which aimed to establish an Islamic state have triggered armed conflicts in Nigeria. These years of conflicts have caused many deaths from both parties. These unending conflicts endanger the lives of Nigerian, the war has made losses in many aspects such as families, homes, and employments that bring income for their daily needs. The losses varies in status and ages, like militaries, civils, volunteers carrying humanity aids, adults and also children, either men or women. Because of these, many Nigerian in conflict areas chose to flee away and saved their lives to secure areas. Among the refugees, there were many who flee away to the south of Nigeria taken charge by the government’s army, although they had to take long distance. But, there were many choosing to flee away to border areas with hopeful thoughts that other countries will give their hands and welcome them as refugees in their countries. The aim of this research is to understand the role of UNHCR in providing protection for Nigerian refugees, the losses of Boko Haram. This study uses normative method focused on 1951 convention of refugees and UNHCR statute. UNHCR as an international organization under United Nations handling problems of refugees has worked to fulfil refugees’ rights in many aspects such as security, basic necessities (food and clothing), education, energy, employment, and health.
