Abstract

This study, entitled The Role of Law Enforcement and the Traditional Institutions In Tackling Antiquities Theft in Tana Toraja. This research is motivated by concern for the protection of archaeological objects in Tana Toraja from the crime of theft. The format of this research is to compare the role of law enforcement and traditional institutions in tackling the theft of archaeological objects in Tana Toraja district. This type of research used is empirical legal research which focuses on social facts that have occurred in the community. The results of this study were: (1) the indigenous Toraja community prefer resolving disputes over thetheft of archaeological objects through litigation rather than through traditional procedures as the criminal sanctions which can be imposed by law enforcement officers on the perpetrators are seen as giving a greater sense of justice (2) Law enforcement authorities often have difficultyresolving disputes over the theft of archaeological objects because thefts are usually carried out in a planned and organised way (3) the role of law enforcement agencies in tackling theft of archaeological objects in Tana Toraja district is in theprosecution of the perpetrators while traditional institutions are more focused on the prevention of theft of archaeological objects.
