Abstract
This research is motivated by the fact that the sequencing and scheduling of assembly operations is the most critical factor in production profitability and has great impact on the assembly line's balance, machine utilization, and even on the feasibility of the assembly line. In this research a case study for a motor cycle assembly line has been considered and will focus on mixed model assembly lines. The product will focus on 3 different product types only, with the composition production for type A, B, and C is I 00: I 00: 150 (2 lots : 2 lots : 31ots). The specific objectives of this research can be written as : (a) To check the line balancing for each product type, based on balance delay and idleness percentage; (b) Prescribe suitable scheduling rule for the assembly line out of the 7 possible methods (Campbell, Dudek, and Smith; Dannenbring; Gupta; Johnson; Stinton and Smith (Heuristic 6); Palmer; and Enumeration); and (3) To develop an effective design for the mixed model assembly lines, based on the type of operators (close or open work stations interface) and provision of buffers in the line.
