Abstract

Capacity enhancing to anticipate consumption increase during post-crisis condition needs a cost-effective strategy because of capital limitation. Facilities addition tends to be avoided. This paper tries to present a strategy to production line capacity enhancing without facilities addition. Previous publications show that production line capacity enhancing using line balancing had been discussed widely. Line capacity enhancing using dynamic re-composition of workstations pursued by product dynamics had been studied already. In this study, production line capacity enhancing is performed under two restrictions. First, facilities addition is not permitted, and second, re-composition of workstations could not be applied. Some workstations in the line, however, could exchange their function. That is why the load of a workstation could be shared to other workstations in order to enhance overall line capacity. The result of this study is a decision model of optimum number in queue upper limit of constrained-workstation. This limit is used as a signal to switch constrained workstation’s load to other workstation. Simulation studies of several hypothetical cases prove that in general, not for all cases, the optimum number in queue upper limits could maximize the line capacity.
