Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find out the feasibility of settlement of penal to journalists by those who feel aggrieved or defamed is an effort that has been appropriately associated with press independence in Law No. 40 of 1999 on the Prevailing Press in Indonesia. In normative legal research, data collection tools used through tracing and/or literature studies in order to obtain the necessary secondary data include: Primary legal material consisting of several provisions of legislation and positive laws related to the subject matter. Secondary legal material is legal material that describes primary legal materials, in the form of research results and opinions of experts, papers, articles, journals, and the internet. The results of the study showed that the settlement by means of penal to journalists for alleged defamation by parties who feel aggrieved or defamed is an effort that is a good effort.
