Abstract

The study examines how the urban form pattern, urban design decisions, and planning policy systems can address the challenges of the urban development process, and contribute to the solutions in the enhancement of the living environment for the elderly people in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The ageing process sometimes means a gradual physical or mental decline. It will, however, depend upon how human beings experience their life-span, their socio-economic, and cultural circumstances. Since the number of elderly people in the city has been increasing very fast, a study of their potential cultural resources and their daily living activities should be thoroughly analysed, in order to reveal potential roles for mutual support and an active community life, toward an integrated urban form that can support human beings including the elderly people. The roles of cultural behaviour of the ageing people in the daily living environment and in the broader society selectively utilised to contribute to the production of a more responsive urban form, and to empower their capabilities during their life-span in accordance with the challenges of the urban development process. Working with elderly people needs a particular attention and methodological treatment. A study about the elderly people and their daily living environment was conducted in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The study analysed the urban form in Yogyakarta through morphological approaches, and also employed a range of environmental perception tools (observation, interviews, questionnaires, focus group discussions) to discover how elderly people in Yogyakarta perceive their environment, what are their needs and aspirations, and the ideas they have for improving urban form elements able to support their daily lives. The findings also show that the socio-cultural traditions practically support the continuation of independent living of elderly, and therefore elderly people need to receive this support to continue to be self-reliant and independent. Based on the findings, proposals and strategies of the urban design and planning policy alternatives to meet the need of the elderly population in Yogyakarta, were formulated. The proposal was tested with different professionals and actors of urban development process in Yogyakarta. As a result, a set of strategies and guidance principles for implementation was established.
