Abstract

This research aims to reveal the internationalization experiences of Giant Chess (www.giantchess.com), Java Handicraft (www.javahandicraft.com), and Java Miniature (www.javaminiature.com), the small-medium enterprises located in Yogyakarta and Surabaya. The three companies utilizes e-commerce technology, the internet, as the only promoting and selling media to penetrate the global market. The internationalization experiences of the three companies are viewed from the aspect of motivation, opportunity, process, problem, and export performance. This research uses case study method with multi cases design. Data was collected by interviews, direct observation, and the review of companies websites. The informants are the owner of each company. Based on the conducted method of content analysis, it was found that the capital cost efficiency benefit offered by e-commerce technology is the main motivation factor in doing internationally oriented online business. Various other opportunities in the domestic and foreign countries also strengthen the companies commitment to engaged in the export market. The next process of internationalization shows the companies follow-up toward motivation, opportunities, and problems. It finally leads to the evaluation of export performance.
