Abstract

This research aims to reveal experience in developing the potential of traditional markets in Yogyakarta , especially by learning from management of Beringharjo tradisional market. Many local government in Indonesia do not have develop the potential of its traditional markets, even in this era of globalization research is a qualitative research using case study method . Data was collected through interviews , observations, and review of records in the , , makes the traditional markets are in the difficult potition to compete with the modern market. Beringharjo market is one of the traditional markets in Yogyakarta that able to develop their potential and survive in a global competition era, so it is important to leraning about the Government experience of Yogyakarta city on some aspects like the process, dynamics and problems. This Government of Yogyakarta City especially on Market Management Office as the government institutions that managing all traditional market in the city of Yogyakarta . The informant was Head of Market Management Office of Yogyakarta , Head of Development Division on Market Management Office of Yogyakarta , and Chairman of the Council APPSI (Asosiasi Pedagang Pasar Seluruh Indonesia) in Yogyakarta. Based on the content analysis conducted, it was found that the Market Management Office of Yogyakarta has developed a social capital of Beringharjo market effectively and able to develop the potential of traditional market in Yogyakarta . The success is realized by being able to achieved several national awards by Beringharjo and Market Management Office in Yogyakarta. Apart from interesting stories from Beringharjo, the success obtained not for a short time of course. It is obtained with a gradual process. In order to achieve that succsess should take the 4K Traditional Market Development aspect (commitment, cooperation, patience and continuity). Right now Beringharjo still repair the deficiencies , obstacles and barriers of traditional market problem. Government, Parliament, traditional traders, and all stakeholders tray to increase mutual cooperation to develop the potential of traditional markets while maintaining the existence of traditional markets in the era of global competition . Presumably experience in Beringharjo can be done in another areas to develop the potential of their traditional markets .
