Abstract

Conflicts happen along a project's life cycle and can hamper project implementation Disfunctional conflicts even have destructive characters and be a barrier to the project performance. One of the sources of conflicts in project management is the personality, including perceptions of the supervisor. A supervisor's perception is formed by many situasional variables, which can be separated into three categories, namely characteristics of the perceiver, characteristics of the perceived, and characteristics of the situasion. Characteristics of the perceiver are the supervisor's perception which are influenced by his personal characteristics, characteristics of the perceived are the supervisor's perceptions towards the project manager. Characteristics of the situasion are the supervisor's perceptions towards environment and the management system of the project. The purposes of this study are : 1) to analyze the correlation between supervisor's perceptions toward project implementation and the level of the disfuncional conflicts on construction sites ;2) to determine the most influential characteristics of the supervisor that cause dysfunctional conflicts ; 3) to analyze the existence of perception' s difference of inter-supervisors which cause the dysfunctional conflicts with different intensity. Data was collected by spreading questionnaire to Yogyakarta, Surakarta, Semarang and Jakarta. From the returned questionnaire, 50 of them can be processed. Data was analyzed by utilizing descriptive statistics, Spearman correlation, and Kruskal Wallis Test by the use of SPSS 7.5 for Windows. The result of data analysis show that : 1) supervisor's perception toward project manager, management system, and project environment statistically correlated with dysfunctional conflict level with coefficients of correlation 0.867, 0.902, and 0.907 respectively. The supervisor's perception which is influenced by the supervisor's personality characteristics has no correlation with the dysfunctional conflicts in project. This can be seen from the significant level that is larger than 0.05; 2) the largest correlation coefficient (0.907) shows that the supervisor's perception toward project environment is the most influential perception characteristics to the dysfunctional conflicts in the project; 3) the value of Chi-Square X2>X2table = 7.815 analyzed by Kruskal Walls Test shows the existence of difference perception inter-supervisors that can cause dysfunctional conflicts.
