Abstract

In 2018 about 500 refugees from Yemen came to seek asylum in Jeju Island, South Korea due to Yemen Civil War that occurs since 2014. Although South Korea has acceded Geneva Convention 1951 and The Protocol of New York 1967, the country is now dealing with refugee crisis due to the protest of South Korea citizens that refused to let Yemeni refugees stay in their country caused by an extreme xenophobia and Islamophobia after “The Candlelight Movement”led by South Korea‟s conservative group happened. This study titled “UNHCR Roles to Protect and Solving Yemeni Refugee Crisis in Jeju Island South Korea” aims to determine the extent to which the role of the UNHCR on the handling of Yemeni refugees in Jeju Island, South Korea and to find out how UNHCR cooperation with other regional organisations and South Korea Government in dealing with the Yemeni refugees. The research method in this study uses normative legal research for the provisions of international law such as 1951 convention of Refugees and The New York Protocol 1967,and UNHCR Statute and library research focused on journals and books about international refugee law and Yemeni refugees in Jeju Island. Based on this, the author came to the conclusion that UNHCR has been fulfilling its role in helping Yemeni refugees to seek protection in South Korea by helping South Korea‟s Authorities to do screening in and screening out process, teaming up with Local Non-Governmental Organization to help the refugees with their basic needs and cultural and language education, and socialization about the existense of Yemeni Refugees to Jeju Island citizens and change their perception and prejudice about Yemeni Refugees there.
