Abstract

Since the civil war that broke out in Syria in 2011, many Syrians have decided to leave their country to seek refuge in other countries. Most of the asylum seekers decided to go to countries in Europe. This is a challenge for Greece as a border country that can be reached by land and sea. But the Greek government is trying to refuse and expel the arrival of Syrian refugees. Many of the Syrian Refugees are receiving inhumane treatment from the Greek authorities. The purpose of this study is to look at violations of human rights and non-refoulement committed against Syrian refugees by the Greek government. This thesis uses normative research methods by reviewing literature studies from international instruments, books, journals, and several sources from the internet that are related to this writing. The results of the research show that Greece did not carry out its obligations and violated the principle of non-refoulement contained in Article 33 of The 1951 Geneva Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees which obliges the states to accept and not expel refugees and also the Greek government failed to fulfill its obligations to respect human rights. In The 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights there is also Article 14 section (1) that everyone has the right to seek asylum in another country to protect themself.
