Abstract

Myanmar is one of the countries in Southeast Asia which is currently experiencing a conflict that is very difficult to resolve. The conflict that occurred in Myanmar was a conflict based on differences of opinion and interests, resulting in a coup carried out by the Myanmar military. This conflict resulted in many countries and international organizations condemning this action and even imposing sanctions on Myanmar officials, even the UK also punished Myanmar generals for their human rights violations. This research aims to determine ASEAN's role in resolving internal conflicts in Myanmar in relation to the ASEAN principle of non-intervention adopted by ASEAN. This research uses normative legal research methods. The data sources used in this research are two primary legal materials and secondary legal materials. The method of collecting data from this research is by literature study and analysis of data sourced from primary and secondary legal materials. Then from this analysis the author draws conclusions using deductive reasoning techniques. The research results show that ASEAN as a regional organization in the Southeast Asia region has carried out its responsibilities despite facing obstacles due to the principle of non-intervention. This principle of non-intervention was created as a form of protection to guarantee the independence and sovereignty of each member country to prevent unwanted foreign intervention in the personal affairs of each member country. However, this principle is applied by ASEAN in its conflict resolution efforts which emphasize more on diplomatic and family methods.
