Abstract

The rapid growth of the culinary sector in Kapanewon Mlati, Sleman Regency, has significantly contributed to the local economy but has also led to an increase in restaurant waste, posing a threat to the water quality of the Code River. This study examines restaurant waste management as an effort to prevent river pollution using an empirical legal research method through interviews with restaurant owners and relevant government agencies. The findings indicate that while some restaurants have implemented waste segregation, many have not fully adopted the 3R principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), particularly in recycling plastic and paper waste. The main challenges identified include low awareness among restaurant owners, inadequate waste management infrastructure, and insufficient government supervision. Additionally, leachate from organic waste and improper disposal of inorganic waste contribute to river pollution. This study recommends strengthening regulations, enhancing collaboration between restaurants and waste management facilities, and providing better infrastructure and education to improve waste management. Effective implementation of these strategies is essential to reduce environmental impacts and maintain the sustainability of the Code River ecosystem.
