Abstract

A city's "image" can be described by its physical impression. In terms of urban development, a city's image plays a role in determining its identity and attractiveness. Accordingly, a city with a clear, positive identity will have a more appealing appearance. The observer's impression of his environment is determined by his adaptability in selecting and organizing his observations so that the environment he observes can provide a different and connected environment. Perception is defined as direct observation with a meaning. Each person's perception is unique, influenced by their level of education, experience, point of view, and other factors. This city image research uses a case study of Samarinda city image to try to understand and explain the condition of Samarinda city image through peta kognisi and city life order based on historical and socio-cultural values of the community that build the city's identity. The results of this city image analysis are in the form of general data about Samarinda, city layout, city areas, city streets, monuments, and buildings in Samarinda. Analysis of the data obtained in the field based on the results of observations and questionnaires to obtain a peta kognisi of respondents on the physical and non-physical structures in the city of Samarinda and carried out through the analysis of the elements that form the image of the city according to Kevin Lynch to determine the image of the city of Samarinda.
